If you’re struggling with a herniated disc, you may have as many questions as you do symptoms. Here are the answers to some frequently asked herniated disc questions here at Chiropractic First.
What is a herniated disc?
This condition involves a vertebral disc that has developed a breach in its annulus fibrosus, or outer casing. This breach permits the nucleus pulposus — the gelatinous inner substance that gives the disc its springiness and height — to poke out from inside the disc.
Can I get a herniated disc from an auto accident?
Herniated discs are a common type of auto accident injury. For instance, a whiplash injury to the neck can force the cervical vertebrae out of position, herniating discs in the process. A jolt to the lower back can herniate lumbar discs. Sports injuries, work injuries and other personal injuries can all produce herniated discs.
I wasn’t injured. Why do I have a herniated disc?
A herniated disc can occur due to age-related degenerative issues that alter the spinal alignment. Bulging discs that have lost their hydration over time are also prone to herniation. Even a lifetime of poor posture can make you vulnerable to herniated discs.
What are the effects of a herniated disc?
The nucleus pulposus can push its way onto neighboring nerve tissues, interfering with normal nerve signaling and producing pain signals that may be referred to other parts of the body. To make matters worse, inflammatory substances in the nucleus pulposus can cause serious pain and irritation at the point of contact.
What are the common symptoms of herniated discs?
Herniated discs commonly cause localized pain in the neck or back, radiating pain down an arm or leg, “pins and needles” sensation, loss of sensation and loss of muscle control in an upper extremity or lower extremity.
How can chiropractic care alleviate pain and discomfort from herniated discs?
Our chiropractor, Dr. James Heath, can examine your spine, symptoms, and recent history confirm a herniated disc diagnosis. If your herniation is related to a spinal misalignment, chiropractic adjustments to that section of the spinal column can relieve disc pressure and help prevent other herniations.
How does spinal decompression therapy help herniated discs?
Spinal decompression therapy uses the principle of vacuum pressure to treat your herniated disc. Our flexion distraction table exerts just enough pressure to draw the protrusion back into the disc, and the disc back into the spinal column, to relieve nerve inflammation and impingement.
